The primary interface is typically used for managemnt purposes, datastore synchronization(if possible), and for server-side out-of-path configuratoins. (Straight-through cable to switch)
the LAN and WAN interfaces are purely L1/L2. No IP addresses can be assigned. Instead, a logical L3 interface is created(In-path interface). When connecting to a router, host, or firewall, a crossover cable needs to be used. When connecting to a switch, a straight-through cable has to be used.
The Steelhead appliance supports auto-MDIX (medium dependent interface crossover), however when using the wrong cables you run the risk of breaking the connection between the components the Steelhead appliances placed in-between, especially in bypass. These components may not support auto-MDIX.
For a virtual in-path deployment the WAN interface needs to be connected. The LAN interface does not need to be connected and will be shut down automatically as soon as the virtual in-path option is enabled in the Steelhead appliances configuration.
For server-side out-of-path deployments only the primary interface needs to be connected.
