CSCI 1000: Survey of Computer
Applications

Course Information
Class Schedule:
Fully Online: All course materials and meetings will take place completely in the Online
environment. There will be NO face to face class meetings.
Course Description:
Course will include comprehensive exploration of applications such as text editing,
spreadsheets, and database systems. It will also include an introduction to microcomputers
and their hardware, communications, operating systems, and programming. There will be
extensive hands on work with the covered software applications. No prior knowledge of
computers is assumed.
Course Goals
The primary goal for this course is to provide students with the ability to use basic
computer applications in an efficient and professional manner.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, students will be able to:
Describe the fundamentals of Information Technology, including definitions, functions, and
equipment.
• Identify the components of a computing system
• List the fundamental features of the internet and its basic protocols
• Create a basic internet privacy and security plan
• Define System Inputs, Outputs, Processing, and Storage
• Compare and contrast data and information
• Create Microsoft Word Documents that make use of tools including page guidelines,
styles, formatting, and media

Textbook:
There is no required textbook. All required course materials will be covered in the unit
materials. If you feel that you need a book of some kind to assist you, you are welcome to
purchase any version of Computing Essentials. To repeat, there is NO REQUIRED textbook
for this course.

The grading scale is as follows:

Software Lab Assignments
For each of the major software applications we will be covering, as well as the programming
unit, you will be responsible for completing a software assignment demonstrating your
proficiency with the application. Each assignment will feature multiple parts, and be specific
to the functions of that application. The assignments will be:
MS Word: Document Construction, you will create a template document featuring page layout
specifications, media add in functions, command of style, design, and color schematics. A list
of requirements for the document will be provided along with a rubric for grading criteria.
Learners will submit the document to the course shell as an attachment for review by the
instructor.
MS Excel: Spread Sheet formatting, learners will create a spreadsheet, featuring the use of
page and sheet setup, cell design and formatting, and the function tool. A list of
requirements for the spreadsheet will be provided along with a rubric for grading criteria.
Learners will submit the spreadsheet to the course shell as an attachment for review by the
instructor.
MS Online: There are a number of Microsoft online programs that you have access to
through the Office 365 account. In this unit we will experiment with these programs and
select one to use as our Software Assignment 3 project.
MS PowerPoint: Presentation Creation, learners will create a powerpoint presentation
using styles, transitions, animations, templates, and masters. . A list of requirements
for the presentation will be provided along with a rubric for grading criteria. Learners
will submit their presentation to the course shell as an attachment for review by the
instructor.
Website HTML: Website creation, learners will create a basic website using styles,
divisions, images, links, and navigation. A list of requirements for the website will be
provided along with a rubric for grading criteria. Learners will submit their website to the
course shell as an attachment for review by the instructor.
Python Coding: Python Program, learners will create a program using strings, operators,
loops, variables, and decision making. A list of requirements for the program will be
provided along with a rubric for grading criteria. Learners will submit their program to the
course shell as an attachment for review by the instructor.
Weekly Activities
For each weekly unit there will be tasks and activities that must be completed to finish the
unit. This can include practice quizzes, exercises, and other small assignments. These tasks
are not graded and are for your benefit. For example, questions found on practice quizzes will
bear a REMARKABLE SIMILARITY to questions found on the exams. Your grade will be based
on completion of the activities.
Discussions
Discussions will be required for certain units in order to complete them, other units will have
discussions available for acquiring assistance from others in order to complete assignments.
Exams
There will be a midterm and final exam in the course. Each will cover half the course materials.
This means that the Final Exam will not be comprehensive, and will cover the material after
the midterm exam.

Class Attendance:
You are going to need to login to Blackboard on a frequent and consistent basis to be
successful in this course. There is no set amount of logins required but you will be contacted
by the instructor if you go more than 1 week between logins.
Academic Integrity
This course will adhere to AUM Standards of Academic Integrity and Honesty.
Cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstance. There are discussions available to get
assistance from your fellow students, and you have the entirety of the internet available to
assist you. Plagiarism will dealt with by awarding an “F” to anyone caught doing so. It is
considered plagiarism to submit anyone else’s work under your own name.
Late or Missed Work
You may submit Software Lab Assignments up to 1 week past the due date for 50%
credit. Weekly Activities and Discussions are not eligible for late submission. Let me repeat
that. Weekly Activities and Discussions are NOT eligible for late submission. An extremely
good excuse is required IN ADVANCE of the exam to be allowed to make up a missed Midterm
or Final Exam. Exam makeups are entirely at the discretion of the instructor.
Drop Deadline
The final drop date for this semester is Friday March 27th.

All students have the opportunity to receive free academic support at AUM. Visit the
Learning Center (LC) in the WASC on second floor Library or the Instructional Support Lab
(ISL) in 203 Goodwyn Hall. The LC.ISL offers writing consulting as well as tutoring in almost
every class through graduate school. The LC may be reached at 244-3470 (call or walk-in for a
session), and the ISL may be reached at 244-3265. ISL tutoring is first-comefirst served.
