1. from Arthur Samuel：Field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

   即：不直接针对问题进行编程的情况下，赋予机器学习的能力。

2. from Tom Mitchell：A computer program is said to learn from experience E with respect to some task T and some performance measure P,

   if its performance on T, as measured by P, improves with experience E.

   即：解决问题 T 的程序能够通过对经验 E 的学习不断提高性能(由 P 度量)。
